To improve our knowledge in the development, survival and spread of drug resistance in malaria parasites and to monitor the extent of drug resistance and efficacy of standard and new antimalaral drugs in areas of interest to ADF. The department explores and evaluates novel malaria detection/diagnosis methods including molecular and various rapid diagnostic kits. The department is engaged in studies investigating P. vivax genetics that determine or correlate with relapses of infections.

To support new drug discovery programs and optimise drug regimens for the treatment and protection of Australian Defence Force personnel against malaria infections. In support of this mission the department assesses the antimalarial activity of promising candidate drugs using parasitological tools and animal models. Pharmacokinetic and pharmacological studies of antimalarial drugs are carried out to optimise dose regimes for treatment and prophylaxis against malaria infections.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) had its first encounter with malaria at Gallipoli in 1915 although only with a few cases. By the end of WW1 the ADF had experienced the true impact of malaria with half of the Desert Mounted Corps in Palestine incapacitated by malaria with over 100 ADF deaths attributed to it
