For Sergeant Amit ‘Sunny’ Jindal, joining the Australian Defence Force was about more than a career, it was an opportunity to contribute to something bigger.

After migrating from India, Sergeant Jindal said Australia provided stability, education and opportunity, and Defence offered a way to give back.

“I wanted to be part of an organisation that contributes directly to the safety and security of Australia,” he said.

“Every role, whether tactical, operational or strategic, contributes to a broader national mission. It creates a workplace where people are motivated by more than just individual outcomes.”

Sergeant Jindal works in personnel administration, supporting the workforce that underpins Defence capability.

He said the professionalism and values within Defence were key factors in his decision to join.

Throughout his career, Sergeant Jindal has worked across different locations and environments, broadening his professional capability and perspective.

“Defence roles can involve travel across Australia and sometimes overseas,” he said.

“It’s a unique opportunity to contribute professionally while experiencing places you might not otherwise visit.”

Beyond operational experience, exposure to senior leadership has been a defining part of his career and he sees Defence's diverse workforce as a key strength.

'Defence recognises that people perform at their best when they feel supported both professionally and personally.'

“People from different cultural and professional backgrounds bring a wide range of perspectives,” he said.

“That diversity strengthens the organisation and reflects the broader Australian community.”

For Sergeant Jindal, Defence is a shared commitment at home. His wife, who also migrated from India, has recently joined Defence as an Australian Public Service employee.

“Through seeing my experience, she felt encouraged to contribute as well. Supporting Defence has become something we both take pride in,” he said.
