After more than a decade in the Australian Army, Lance Corporal Timothy Thompson has no doubt that joining the Australian Defence Force was one of the best decisions of his life.

“Since the age of 14, I’ve been fascinated with Defence life,” Lance Corporal Thompson said.

“From wearing the uniform to seeing the world, it’s an honour to serve and represent Australia wherever I go.”

Currently posted to HMAS Canberra in Sydney, Lance Corporal Thompson serves as a cargo specialist – a role that involves loading and forwarding cargo via sea, land or rail to ensure forward operating elements of the ADF have the stores and equipment they need to complete their missions.

“It’s a hands-on job that uses everything from heavy vehicles and forklifts to cranes,” Lance Corporal Thompson said.

“We make sure everything gets where it needs to be so operations can happen successfully.”

He said his time in the ADF has not just given him a range of skills and unique experiences but also a deep sense of purpose.

“There’s something special about knowing the work you do contributes directly to the Defence mission,” Lance Corporal Thompson said.

“Whether it’s loading critical supplies, deploying to support recovery efforts, or helping our partner nations, it all means something. That sense of purpose is what keeps me motivated every day.”

He added that pride in wearing the Army uniform is something that never fades.

“It’s more than just a job, it’s a calling. You feel part of something much bigger than yourself,” he said.

For Lance Corporal Thompson, the most rewarding part of his job has been the opportunity to serve in Royal Australian Navy vessels and support domestic and international operations.

“I’ve been deployed around Australia and overseas, supporting partner nations during humanitarian efforts and post-disaster recovery,” he said.

“I have travelled to some amazing places and engaged with communities that remind you exactly why we do what we do.”

Working alongside Navy colleagues on ships has also been a career highlight.

“Ship postings are some of the most sought after because of the travel and the teamwork. You get to employ your skills in small boat operations, material handling equipment operations and port services – no two days are the same,” Lance Corporal Thompson said.

Recently promoted to lance corporal and now serving as second-in-command in a section, he takes pride in developing his leadership and mentoring skills.

“My biggest passion in the ADF is to be a competent and respected leader and mentor,” he said.

“I’ve learned a lot about teamwork, resilience and responsibility. Those are lessons that will stick with me long after my career.”

Lance Corporal Thompson also highlighted the range of benefits available to ADF personnel that make service life rewarding and sustainable.

“Honestly, it’s everything – job security, housing, travel opportunities and gym access,” he said.

“You’re supported through housing assistance, you get paid extra when you work in remote locations, and the ADF even helps with flights home in some circumstances. Those things make a real difference, especially for families.”

The ADF’s focus on personal development has been one of the most valuable aspects of his career.

“If I had to pick one benefit that stands out, it would be the opportunities for career and personal development. You never stop learning in this job,” he said.

As Lance Corporal Thompson reflects on his time in the Army, he remains proud of the contribution cargo specialists make to the wider Defence mission.

“Our trade is changing to meet current and future strategic needs. It is vital to Defence operations,” he said.

“It takes commitment and sacrifice, but the sense of purpose and the people you meet make it all worthwhile.”
