As a 21-year-old, Warrant Officer Matthew Budd felt dissatisfied with his studies and uncertain about his future. He found a new opportunity in Defence and embarked on a career that would not only provide professional growth but travel, financial stability and lifelong friendships.

“I was seeking adventure and something worthwhile to contribute to,” said Warrant Officer Budd, who is now an Airborne Electronics Analyst in the Air Force – after the Defence website caught his attention, he felt it was the perfect fit.

Now with 20 years of service under his belt, Warrant Officer Budd has been part of numerous operations and exercises. From the Middle East to South-East Asia, to Canada and Scotland, his role has provided him with the opportunity to travel to many places.

“I’ve seen incredible things from a unique perspective,” he said.

“The opportunity to travel is one of my favourite parts about working for Defence. Within six months of qualifying, I was already deploying on operations around the world.”

Beyond travel, Warrant Officer Budd’s service has also been financially rewarding. A structured career path, attractive pay and additional benefits helped him and his family look to their future.

“My pay picked up really quickly,” he said.

“Within a short time, I was buying my first house. Not many of my civilian friends could do that at my age.”

Warrant Officer Budd highlighted access to the Home Purchase Assistance Scheme, the Home Purchase or Sale Expenses Allowance and Defence Housing Assistance as key benefits he has used.

He also accessed the ADF Family Health Program (ADFFHP) administered by Navy Health, a not-for-profit health insurer. The ADFFHP helps members’ eligible dependents claim costs for certain healthcare services received in Australia.

“The support for buying a house and the gap cover through Navy Health have made a huge difference,’’ he said.

“Now that I have a family, these benefits are even more valuable.”

Additionally, Warrant Officer Budd values the numerous opportunities for career growth presented to him at Defence, including paid study and professional training.

“Defence really invests in your future. Whether it’s the paid study opportunities or the flexibility at work, it’s clear that they care about your development and wellbeing,” he said.

He also values the sense of purpose and camaraderie that comes with being a part of the Defence community.

“The mateship you develop through shared experiences is unique,’’ he said.

“The teamwork and sense of belonging you get from working alongside dedicated professionals is amazing.

“It’s a supportive environment where you know you’re contributing to something bigger than yourself.”

After two decades of service, Warrant Officer Budd said: “I can honestly say my time at Defence has made me a happier, more well-rounded person. I’ve had the chance to meaningfully contribute to the world whilst enjoying engaging work, great benefits and unforgettable experiences. It’s been a life-changing journey.”

Warrant Officer Budd’s story highlights the many benefits of a career with Defence, and that it is more than just a job.
