Golfers from HMAS Cairns and the greater Cairns community participated in a two-person ambrose competition to raise awareness and funds for Far North Queensland Legacy on September 3.
More than 100 golfers, volunteers and supporters enjoyed a barbecue breakfast provided by Navy catering staff.
With blue skies above and briefings completed, the participants began the event at Cairns Golf Club in ideal conditions.
Golfers battled it out for individual prizes on each hole, while teams contended for overall glory. Several holes had games and tasks that added to the raising of funds for Legacy.
After the teams finished and the raffle was drawn, everyone enjoyed a barbecue lunch provided by Salt House and talked about their achievements on the course, or lack thereof.
Major supporter Dixon Homes representative Andrew Thomas thanked Cairns and the organisers and said he looked forward to being involved next year.
Able Seaman Damien Field said it was the best ambrose and charity golf day he had participated in.
“The atmosphere was great and I felt great knowing that all the people there where there to support a great cause,” Able Seaman Field said.
“The day was enjoyable and all Navy players and volunteers brought credit to the Navy.”
The Cairns Legacy Golf Day was last held more than 11 years ago, where it hosted about 60 players and raised about $4000.
This year, 80 golfers competed for more than $2000 in prizes and a raffle with more than $7000 in prizes.
Organisers had a goal of raising $10,000 for Legacy, and with the generous support of the people of Cairns, more than $14,000 was raised at the event.
Commanding Officer Cairns Commander Andy Thorpe thanked the sponsors and volunteers and acknowledged the tireless efforts of Far North Queensland Legacy and their positive impact on serving members and families.
Organisers also thanked the Cairns Golf Club, Legacy, Dixon Homes, Salt House, J3Seven and those who orchestrated the whole event from behind the scenes.
