Online training gets gamified

14 August 2024

The Cove, Army's professional military education (PME) platform, has just launched its biggest upgrade ever.

Named ‘Cove 4.0’, the new PME platform debuted this month, with a mission to ‘level up’ professional development across Army.

Since 2016, The Cove played an important role in Army PME, helping to develop soldiers and officers at all levels with a range of professional development content, tools and resources.

Cove 4.0, the newest and largest overhaul, now includes gamification, challenges, leader boards and other user-experience enhancements.

It aims to increase engagement, celebrate progress and foster friendly competition, making professional development an engaging and meaningful experience rather than a solitary undertaking.

Cove 4.0 provides everyone from soldiers to units with the means to conduct PME and rewards members who invest in their professional development.

New features allow users to track their progress, participate in challenges and set professional-development goals.

As learners engage with the platform, they earn experience points and ‘level up’, unlocking unique achievements, competing with other members and units, and becoming eligible to win prizes and, of course, bragging rights.

Units can also track their members’ progress on leader boards and reward PME efforts conducted by unit members.

Further updates and improvements are planned, including the ability to create and join groups and learning hubs, enabling a personalised PME experience, facilitating group discussions and providing the ability to coordinate PME for teams.

Lieutenant Colonel Chris Johnson, of Headquarters Forces Command, said Cove 4.0 was a game-changer for Army PME.

“PME is crucial for developing our soldiers and officers, so we've designed Cove 4.0 to engage and reward members and units that conduct professional development regularly,” Lieutenant Colonel Johnson said.

Major Andrew Stokes, of Headquarters Forces Command, said Cove 4.0 made it easy to integrate professional development into a daily routine.

“We've received positive feedback so far; many users are enjoying the new platform,” he said.
