To mark the 100th year of Legacy, HMAS Waterhen personnel and volunteers across all three services spent Legacy Week raising funds for the not-for-profit charity.
The organisation emerged in the aftermath of World War 1, when the plight of war widows and their children became a concern, with the pomise of providing the stability, guidance and assistance that a partner would normally provide to their family.
Legacy Week honours and supports veterans and families of those who have served in the defence of Australia in times of peace and war.
The annual week-long commemoration, which usually occurs in September, marks the sacrifices made by servicemen and women, while also raising funds for the wellbeing of their families.
The 100 Waterhen volunteers raised almost $25,000 from members of the North Sydney community.
Volunteers and supporters play a crucial role in the success of the event, by selling badges, organising fundraising events and spreading awareness through various channels.
Leading Seaman Kirby Safford said there was a positive response from the community.
“It was fantastic to see the enthusiastic response from the local North Sydney community and how generous and forthcoming people can be, especially during a time when times are getting tough for many people,” Leading Seaman Safford said.
