The Air Force Aviation Program for Women recently gave young women from across Australia the opportunity to experience life in the military at RAAF Bases Williamtown, Amberley and Edinburgh.
Designed exclusively for women aged 18 to 24, the program provides a behind-the-scenes look at Air Force life, exposing participants to the people, skills and teamwork that enable Air Force capability every day.
Throughout the program, participants took part in hands-on activities and engaged with Air Force personnel from a range of trades and specialisations. From aviation and engineering to logistics, security and maintenance, the experience highlighted the diverse career pathways available across Air Force.
Participants gained firsthand insight into Defence careers by exploring aircraft and equipment, visiting operational workspaces and hearing directly from serving members about their careers, training and day-to-day responsibilities.
A key focus of the program is encouraging young women to explore opportunities they may not have previously considered. It highlights the diverse pathways available in Air Force, demonstrating that success can be achieved across a broad range of technical, operational and support roles.
'By hearing directly from our people and seeing capability up close, participants gain a real appreciation for the teamwork and professionalism that underpin Air Force.'
Officer in Charge Squadron Leader Kirsty Lewis said the program helps participants gain a broader understanding of Air Force careers.
"The Air Force Aviation Program for Women gives young women a genuine insight into Air Force life and the opportunities available across our workforce," Squadron Leader Lewis said.
For many attendees, the program challenged common misconceptions about military service. While pilots and aircrew are often the most visible roles, participants discovered the hundreds of specialised jobs that work together to support operations and deliver air power.
Squadron Leader Lewis said engaging with serving members was one of the most valuable aspects of the experience.
"By hearing directly from our people and seeing capability up close, participants gain a real appreciation for the teamwork and professionalism that underpin Air Force," she said.
Since its launch in 2013, the Air Force Aviation Program for Women has encouraged thousands of young women to explore careers in Defence. Through immersive, firsthand experiences, the program continues to broaden perspectives, showcase diverse career opportunities and inspire the next generation to consider a future in Air Force.
