In keeping with annual tradition, Navy Week celebrations got off to a swing with the annual golf day and a church service at HMAS Moreton.
Navy members, friends and family from past and present attended the truncated and COVID-safe golf event at Oxley golf club, Queensland.
Event organiser Warrant Officer Col Scott said the event was a great success.
“This is the fourth year for Navy Week golf and with 81 players it was the biggest Moreton has seen,” Warrant Officer Scott said.
Supported by Department of Veteran Affairs, the event timed perfectly with Veterans’ Health Week, which started on October 24.
Participants from Wounded Heroes Association and Open Arms also attended the golf day.
Community Engagement Coordinator for Open Arms Emma Adams said it was great to see so many veterans playing.
“This year’s theme is ‘social connection’ so I think this has well and truly met that theme,” Ms Adams said.
Members also attended the annual church service at St John the Baptist Church, Bulimba.
The Royal Australian Navy band - South Queensland played hymns as Chaplain Stephen Briggs led the service.
“We come together to worship God during Navy Week, to seek God’s blessing on all connected with the sea and to commemorate the endeavours, achievements and sacrifices of the personnel of the Navy and merchant navy,” Chaplain Briggs said.
Chaplain Briggs said he was grateful that despite many of the usual activities unable to take place this year, some remained.
Navy Week is celebrated at various times by the states and territories.
