Defence Business Readiness Tool

The Defence Business Readiness Tool (DBRT) allows small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to:

  • assess readiness against industry best practices
  • understand what it means to be 'Defence ready'
  • prioritise actions to help grow Defence business capability.

DBRT is hosted in a secure cloud environment and meets Australian Government Information Security Manual security requirements.


To receive support or advisory services from ODIS, businesses must:

Assessment process

After creating an account, SMEs can commence their assessment by answering an initial set of 21 questions

Responses will generate an initial snapshot that triggers an ODIS support or advisory service, based on the capability alignment, strengths, and areas for improvement.

The initial assessment is based on the following categories:

  • Market understanding and communications

    Identify and validate opportunities, aligning to Defence needs, and developing a value proposition.

  • Confidence in delivery

    Accepting work, following standards, continuous improvement, materials, equipment, and labour.

  • Strategic outlook

    Business strategy, culture and values, market diversity, financial viability, risk management and business continuity.

  • Product and offering development

    Delivery strategies, innovation and research and development, and collaboration.
