On 8 July 2021, the Australian Government announced the formal establishment of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.
The Royal Commission’s inquiry, which concluded on 28 August 2024, examined systemic issues and common themes in past deaths-by-suicide of Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel and veterans. This included suspected suicides and lived experience of suicide risks.
The Royal Commission delivered its Interim Report on 11 August 2022, and the Final Report, containing 122 recommendations, was delivered on 9 September 2024.
The Government responded to the Final Report on 2 December 2024, agreeing or agreeing-in-principle to 104 recommendations and noting 17 for further work.
Defence welcomed the Royal Commission as a once in a generation opportunity to learn and strengthen Defence's approach to mental health and welfare wellbeing, and create a better workplace experience for personnel.
Defence thanks those current and former serving personnel and their families who have bravely shared their stories with the Royal Commission.
Defence is implementing the recommendations with urgency. This is a significant body of work that will deliver meaningful and long-lasting reform. Read more about:
