Property disposals

Defence regularly reviews property assets to ensure current and future capability requirements are being met.

When a property is identified as surplus, Australian Government approval is obtained to allow the disposal of the property.

In preparation for sale, Defence completes due diligence activities in accordance with the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The information produced from these activities is provided to potential buyers.

Unsolicited offers outside of competitive sale processes are not permitted. All sale proceeds are reinvested in support of the Australian Defence Force.

Purchases can be made via the following.

Open market Off market
  • Any person or company who is eligible to purchase property in Australia can purchase the property.
  • A marketing agent is appointed to sell each property and can be contacted directly for further information.
  • A fact sheet is provided which includes the details of the real estate agent.

The Commonwealth Property Disposal Policy also contemplates opportunity for land swaps between the Commonwealth and a state, territory or local government. Land swaps must support shared government policy outcomes or policy objectives and require the support of both relevant portfolio Ministers and the Finance Minister’s endorsement before commencing negotiations.
