Divestment underway

Functions

The Pialligo South land was formerly buffer land for RAAF Fairbairn and has a varied history of use, including as a sand and gravel mine, a garbage tip, and for storage of materials and by-products by the Commonwealth and the ACT Government. A section of this site is licensed to Canberra Concrete Recyclers.

This site was declared surplus to Defence requirements in 2012 and divestment is underway.

This site has not been used by Defence since 1940 and is licenced to a civilian operator for commercial activities.

History and heritage

Places included in the Commonwealth Heritage List have protections under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The Government has an obligation to protect the Commonwealth Heritage values of a place as part of any sale.

Pialligo South contains one Commonwealth Heritage listing, which includes three wartime Bomb Dump Buildings.

The Commonwealth Heritage listing for the nearby Redwood Plantation does not extend into the Pialligo South divestment boundary. Defence acknowledges that parts the site may hold significance to First Nations communities.

Options will be explored with future owners to manage heritage obligations as a condition of sale.
