Technical Intelligence

Have you even wondered how a fighter aircraft or ballistic missile works? Would you like the challenge of analysing advanced weapons capabilities developed by foreign powers? Do you want to enable the Australian Government to keep Australia’s military personnel safe?

Our Technical Intelligence Analysts use their unique technical expertise to analyse and report on weapon systems and defence technologies that may pose threats to Australian forces. Technical Intelligence Analysts access and analyse intelligence sources and use complex research and engineering skills to determine the capabilities of weapon systems, radars, sensors and military technologies. They employ specialist analytical tools, methodologies and techniques to prepare technical assessments that support deployed military commanders and the development of future Australian defence capabilities.

Our analysts draw on their technical acumen and strong analytical skills, performing stimulating, challenging and rewarding work. We employ some of Australia’s brightest and most innovative analysts, they evaluate and analyse information and data from a variety of technical sources including satellites, technical research papers, foreign media (including social media) and human contacts. This work is all the more challenging because the technical picture is often incomplete, can be contradictory and varies in reliability. Technical intelligence analysts need to work collaboratively, examining all of the information, employing their technical or engineering judgement to understand and assess the capability of the system or technology and then put that information or data model in a format that meets customer needs.

Technical Intelligence Analysts are currently providing direct support to Australian military forces deployed in the Middle East and Afghanistan, operating across South-East Asia and the Pacific, training in Australia and overseas, and in support of Australia’s coalition partners. Technical intelligence assessments also directly support Australian government decision-makers, strategic policy and planning.

Technical Intelligence Analysts will receive specialist training to prepare them to succeed in their career within DIO. Continued learning and development is encouraged as analysts progress through their career with DIO.
