About the base

A major Defence enabler of Basic Flying (Fixed Wing Aircraft) Training for all three services.

The base plays a major role in training the next generation of Air Force personnel under the Air Academy and new Air Force officers at the Officer's Training School, plus is home base for the Roulettes aerobatic display.

All visitors must report to the Pass Office before entering the base.

About the base

Puckapunyal Military Area (PMA) was first used as a mobilisation and training area during World War 1. By 1939, the area was formally established as Puckapunyal Camp, and military activity in the area commenced in the early 1940s. The camp's name was derived from the name of a large hill within the field training area, today known as Mount Puckapunyal. There is some uncertainty about the origins of the word ‘Puckapunyal’, the most common explanation being that is an aboriginal word meaning 'Among the Hills'.

All vehicles coming on-site must visually and legibly display their name and mobile contact number on the vehicle dashboard.

No cameras or video recording devices to be used on site.

Domestic animals are not allowed on site.

Speed limit is 20km/h throughout the base unless otherwise signposted.

About the base

Site activities are limited to predominantly office/administration. It is located in Melbourne CBD, the nearest train station Southern Cross Station.

Access

Only authorised vehicles allowed on site. There is no visitor parking at Defence Plaza Melbourne for private plated vehicles. Requests for business related parking can be made by contacting Access Control segservicedeliverysezaccesscontrol.vbm@defence.gov.au.

About the base

The Albury Wodonga Military Area (AWMA) consists of 3 barracks:
