The 2026 Minister’s Award for Achievement in Defence Science, Defence’s highest individual scientific honour, has been awarded to Andrew Hart in recognition for his exceptional contribution to advancing Australia’s sovereign defence capabilities.

Over more than a decade at Defence Science and Technology Group, Andrew’s scientific innovation and leadership have transformed Australia’s sovereign rocket propulsion capability and laid the foundations for future Australian long-range strike and hypersonic weapons systems. 

Andrew’s work has established capabilities that did not previously exist in Australia, including sovereign rocket motor design, manufacturing and expertise. 

Rocket propulsion is one of the most complex and critical components of modern guided weapons, making his achievements vital to the future of Australia’s defence capability.  

The award also recognises Andrew's role in strengthening Australia’s sovereign defence industrial base and supporting the nation’s long-term strategic interests. Through enduring partnerships with Australian industry, he has helped translate world-class Defence science into tangible national capability.

Since 1988, the prestigious Minister’s Award for Achievement in Defence Science has recognised the highest standard of scientific and technological excellence in Defence Science and Technology Group. As Defence’s premier award for individual scientific achievement, the internationally recognised biannual award highlights the critical role of Defence science makes in delivering capability, preparedness and strategic advantage for Australia.
