The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) today conducted its annual Chief of the Defence Force (CDF) Parade, marking both the completion of initial military training for first‑year Trainee Officers and the Academy’s 40th anniversary since its establishment in 1986.
Chief of the Defence Force, Admiral David Johnston AC RAN, reviewed and addressed the Parade, formally welcoming the new cohort of midshipmen and officer cadets to the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
Admiral Johnston said the parade is a proud moment for the academy and for the families who have supported their trainee officers throughout their journey.
“This cohort of future leaders have all made a commitment to serve their nation and become part of something bigger than themselves,” said Admiral Johnston.
“ADFA has shaped the values, discipline and knowledge of generations of officers who serve and have served our nation with distinction.”
“As stewards of the ADF, I am confident they will do their families and their country proud, and carry forward the distinguished legacy of our historic institution.”
This year, ADFA has welcomed 375 new trainee officers, each of whom, on graduating, will go on to a career as an officer in the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army or Royal Australian Air Force.
ADFA has also continued its longstanding commitment to training future leaders from abroad. This year, the academy has welcomed 15 international trainee officers from 10 nations, who will develop their military skills at ADFA before returning to serve in their respective armed forces.
ADFA Commandant, Brigadier Troy Francis, said the CDF parade is an important introduction to the ceremonial traditions that shape service in the ADF.
“For our new trainee officers, this is their first experience participating in an ADF parade, and it is made all the more meaningful by the presence of their families,” said Brigadier Francis.
“Their support is fundamental to the journey ahead, and today’s ceremony reflects that partnership between our people and those who stand behind them.
“As we celebrate 40 years of this institution, we are reminded of the strength of our people and the vital role ADFA continues to play in the future of the Australian Defence Force.”
