Final Operational Capability (FOC) has been declared for the block upgrade of Australia’s C-130J Hercules fleet.

The fleet of 12 aircraft are operated by No. 37 Squadron, based at RAAF Base Richmond, NSW.

Delivered under Project AIR 5440, the upgrades to aircraft systems and safety-critical software and hardware bring the C-130J Hercules fleet up to the latest Block configuration (Block 8.1), enhancing capability, reliability, and mission readiness.

Additionally, the aircraft have received significant upgrades to their communications and navigation suite; incorporating datalink, integrated satellite voice, new high-frequency radios, and improved instrument approach capabilities.

The first aircraft was upgraded by Lockheed Martin in the United States with support from the United States Air Force. The remaining 11 aircraft were modified at RAAF Base Richmond by C-130J sustainment partner Airbus Australia Pacific.

The C-130J Full Flight Simulator has also been upgraded, with system modifications completed by CAE Australia.

The C-130J Hercules was introduced to Australian service in 1999. Capable of moving approximately 120 passengers or up to 20 tonnes of cargo, the aircraft provides a medium air mobility capability for the Australian Defence Force between the smaller C-27J Spartan and larger C-17A Globemaster III.

The Block 8.1 upgrades will ensure the aircraft remain at the forefront of capability until deliveries of Australia’s expanded replacement fleet of 20 new C-130J Hercules aircraft begin later this decade.
