The Secretary of Defence has awarded 23 grants to 22 unique entities under Defence’s 2025 Strategic Policy Grants Program.
After consideration in a highly competitive round, Defence will fund up to AUD $5.7 million in grants, including contributions from across the portfolio.
This open and competitive grant opportunity aims to deepen public debate on topics relevant to Australia’s strategic circumstances, and inform Defence’s policy decision making.
The 2025 program requested applicants address one of five priority policy questions, or address priorities and challenges outlined in the 2024 National Defence Strategy.
The successful applicants will address key topics for Defence, including nuclear
non-proliferation, crisis and conflict response, readiness and effectiveness of military forces, national preparedness, and strengthening Australia’s deterrence capabilities.
The full list of successful grant recipients are as follows:
Over the next three years, these grantees will develop independent, evidence-based, research and supporting activities.
They will also connect with experts within and outside of Government.
Their grants will provide distinct insights and perspectives on defence policy, improve defence knowledge and capability, and foster new and emerging talent in Australia’s strategic and defence policy ecosystem.
