HMAS Brisbane departs for third ADF Regional Presence Deployment for 2025

10 August 2025

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is continuing its Regional Presence Deployment program, with Royal Australian Navy destroyer HMAS Brisbane conducting the third deployment for 2025.

After leaving the Port of Townsville in July, HMAS Brisbane conducted integration training with the United Kingdom Carrier Strike Group in early August as part of Operation Highmast, and will soon participate in Exercise Alon 25 in the Philippines.

Regional presence deployments involve military visits into the Indo-Pacific region, and participation in exercises and cooperative activities with partner nations, reinforcing Australia’s commitment to supporting a secure, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

HMAS Brisbane will conduct port visits to the Philippines and Japan, as well as operate alongside regional partners to enhance cooperation and maritime interoperability

This deployment follows the successful deployment of HMA Ships Hobart and Sydney earlier this year.

Chief of Joint Operations, Vice Admiral Justin Jones, AO, CSC, RAN said the deployment reflected the ADF’s long-standing regional partnerships and shared security interests.

“Our regional presence is about demonstrating Australia’s commitment to working closely with partners across the Indo-Pacific,” Vice Admiral Jones said.

“By maintaining a consistent and capable presence, we help promote stability, build trust, and contribute to a region where the sovereignty of all nations is respected.”

Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, AO, RAN said the deployment signalled Australia’s operational readiness and commitment to strengthening relationships with regional partners.

“Maritime security is the foundation of our economic security,” Vice Admiral Hammond said.

“These deployments are critical to developing shared understanding with our allies and partners as we collectively enhance maritime security in the region.”

Regional presence deployments are a key part of the ADF’s ongoing engagement with the region and highlight Australia’s role as a proactive and reliable security partner.

This Regional Presence Deployment will conclude in November 2025.
