Defence congratulates Warrant Officer Class 2 Shane Cox (Army), Specialist Recruiter Indigenous, on being shortlisted for the Australian HR Institute (AHRI) Diversity Champion Award.
Shane is one of three contenders for the AHRI Award, which recognises role models who champion and drive diversity initiatives.
Director General Defence Force Recruiting (DFR), Air Commodore Sue McGready said that Shane’s networks and his community engagement has undoubtedly contributed to Defence’s recruitment success.
“In the last financial year, eight percent of all people recruited into the Australian Defence Force (ADF) identified as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander,” Air Commodore McGready said.
“Shane has personally supported and mentored about 180 Indigenous candidates from the Newcastle, Hunter, North Coast and Central West region, helping them commence Navy, Army and Air Force careers.
“He has facilitated numerous experiences showcasing career paths and the life which is possible in the ADF.
“He has enabled dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander information sessions and aptitude testing in order to create a supportive environment where young men and women could thrive” Air Commodore McGready said.
At the national level, Shane has worked with DFR’s marketing and communication teams to shape communication materials for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people considering ADF careers.
He has also contributed to training the DFR workforce, ensuring all recruitment personnel are aware of policies and initiatives to better enable Indigenous participation in the ADF workforce.
“Shane is a leader amongst DFR’s team of 13 Specialist Recruiters Indigenous, who all play a really important role in reducing barriers,” Air Commodore McGready said.
“He works with the team and broader recruitment personnel to shape and enable better outcomes for Indigenous candidates and Defence.
“I commend Shane for this achievement and wish him the best of luck.”
The winner of the 2018 Award will be announced at the AHRI Awards dinner in Melbourne on 29 November.
