Defence Statement on FOI 366/17/18 - Incidents involving lost, missing or recovered weapons and explosives from 2015 to 2017

Defence published an FOI request to its website on 25 June 2018 in relation to incidents involving lost, missing or recovered weapons and explosives from 2015 to 2017. Defence can confirm that two weapons listed in the FOI have subsequently been recovered. As inquiries are ongoing, Defence is unable to comment further on these matters. 

Defence takes the security of its firearms, other weapons and munitions seriously and has a range of measures in place to safeguard them.

When stored, Defence weapons and explosive ordnance are held in facilities that meet the highest standard of security, requiring multiple personnel to be present to access. Personnel with access are required to meet minimum security clearance levels.

Any suspected or actual loss of weapons and explosive ordnance is investigated to recover the loss and identify any policy or process improvements that are required.
