Approximately 100 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel will participate in the opening ceremony for the Rugby League World Cup 2017, to be held at Melbourne’s Rectangular Stadium tonight.
The ceremony will be followed by the opening men’s game to be played between Australia and England. The Rugby League World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the region this year.
The ADF will be involved throughout the World Cup for all Australian based men’s and women’s games; matches include those to be played in Melbourne, Canberra, Cairns, Townsville, Sydney, Perth, Darwin and Brisbane.
Three members of the ADF Women’s Rugby League team will represent the Australian Jillaroos at the Women’s Rugby League World Cup. Talesha Quinn (Army) and Meg Ward (Royal Australian Air Force) will be a part of the Jillaroos squad, with Lucy Lockhart (Army) selected as a reserve.
President of ADF Rugby League, Air Commodore Ken Quinn, said the ADF was extremely proud of the three members who have been selected to represent Australia.
“The World Cup will provide Talesha, Meg and Lucy with an opportunity to represent the ADF at an elite international competition,” Air Commodore Quinn said.
“Sport is a large part of ADF life and it is great to see some of our best on the world stage.”
The Jillaroos play their first match of the Women’s World Cup against Canada in Sydney on 16 November 2017.
The Rugby League World Cup 2017 games will be played in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea over the next five weeks, culminating in the men’s and women’s finals to be played at Brisbane Stadium on Saturday 2 December 2017.
