For a few precious hours during Exercise Pitch Black, the focus shifted from fast jets and the flightline to children at the paediatric ward at Royal Darwin Hospital .

RAAF personnel and representatives from Fiji, the United States, Canada, India, New Zealand, Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Germany and Spain spent time with young patients and their families, strengthening connections within the community.

As personnel guided the eager children to build miniature aircraft gliders, both parties exchanged stories of adventure, courage and dreams yet to be realised

What began as a simple activity quickly transformed into something far more meaningful – a shared experience of connection, joy and possibility with each carefully folded creation becoming a symbol of hope, carrying aspirations as it soared across the ward.

Paediatric nurse Garry Estandarte said that in a hospital setting many children come in facing procedures, surgery or other challenges, which can make it a difficult and overwhelming experience. 

'Sometimes a simple conversation, a shared story or a few moments of kindness can remind someone that they are seen, supported and never facing their journey alone.'

“Seeing pilots, medical personnel and members involved in protecting our skies gives the kids a sense of positivity and inspiration,” Mr Estandarte said.

“It allows them to look beyond what they are facing in the moment and think, ‘Maybe one day I could be like them’.”

Private Samuela Tilolo from Republic of Fiji Military Forces said the opportunity to meet a fellow Fijian was deeply emotional. 

“Although we are far from home, we remain one family. What made today so meaningful was the opportunity to extend that same sense of belonging to every child and family we met,” Private Tilolo said.

“Sometimes a simple conversation, a shared story or a few moments of kindness can remind someone that they are seen, supported and never facing their journey alone.” 

While the children were left with stickers, gliders and memories of an extraordinary day, the visiting personnel departed with stories, dreams and the profound privilege of seeing courage, hope and imagination through the eyes of the children who inspired them.
