Laughter, teamwork and a little healthy competition were on the menu when members of RAAF, New Zealand Defence Force and Royal Canadian Air Force visited Alawa Primary School in Darwin on July 20 during Exercise Pitch Black.
The international personnel swapped flight lines for baking trays as they joined students in the school’s highly anticipated brownie baking competition.
The event provided a unique opportunity for Defence members from three partner nations to connect with the local community, while showcasing the spirit of friendship and cooperation that underpins Pitch Black.
Students took on their military guests in baking the perfect brownie. The friendly contest was judged by four military chefs. Panel member Sergeant Yannick Gagnon from Royal Canadian Air Force had a tough job with baking standards red hot.
“Events like this are a great reminder of what multinational exercises are all about – bringing people together for a good cause,” Sergeant Gagnon said.
'It was an honour to spend time with the students and support such a fantastic school event with an international team of chefs.'
“Seeing different nations support the local school cooking program while putting together such incredible dishes made judging a real challenge, with only one point separating first and second place.”
While Pitch Black focuses on strengthening international partnerships and integration in the skies, the visit to Alawa Primary School highlighted the importance of building connections on the ground. Activities like this cook-off allowed Defence members and partners to engage with young Australians.
Australian brownie judge, Sergeant Francisco Calcino from 13 Squadron, was delighted to be part of such a memorable event.
“It was an honour to spend time with the students and support such a fantastic school event with an international team of chefs,” Sergeant Calcino said.
“The kids brought so much energy and enthusiasm to the competition.”
The event proved that whether on base or in the kitchen, teamwork remains a key ingredient for success.
