It started as an impromptu game of basketball and ended with students schooling Exercise Pitch Black pilots on the basketball court during a recent visit to Katherine. 

Students at MacFarlane Primary School in Katherine welcomed members of RAAF and the United States Air Force (USAF) to learn about Pitch Black and roles in defence. 

What began as an opportunity to learn about the exercise quickly took a turn into a memorable morning of teamwork, laughter and friendly competition. 

Students and serving members traded questions for passes and turned introductions into instant friendships. Any early nerves quickly bounced away as students challenged their military guests, proving that teamwork and a love of sport can bridge just about any gap.

Flight Lieutenant Ashleigh Knowles from RAAF said the game was one of the highlights of the visit, where children could learn about the 21 nations and 2500 personnel deployed to the exercise from across the world.

"Watching students and serving members jump in together so naturally showed just how quickly genuine connections were formed," Flight Lieutenant Knowles said.

The visit helped students understand the reason for increased aircraft activity around Katherine and provided a firsthand look at the multinational forces participating in Pitch Black.

USAF personnel joined the friendly contest, giving students a unique opportunity to meet serving members from another nation and learn more about the partnerships that help make exercises a success.

USAF flight surgeon Major Parker Spriggs said the experience was equally rewarding for the visiting personnel.

"Meeting the students in Katherine and sharing a little about what we do during Pitch Black was a privilege,” Major Spriggs said.

"Their enthusiasm and thoughtful questions were a great reminder that building connections with our Australian partners and the local community is every bit as important as the training itself.”

Curious minds were in full flight as students asked questions about everything from military aviation to life in the United States.

While Pitch Black strengthens partnerships in the air, the visit to MacFarlane Primary School showed that some of the strongest connections are built on the ground.
