Navy’s Deputy Fleet Commander Commodore Anita Williams has completed her tenure in the role, handing over to Commodore Ben Hissink.

In a ceremony at Fleet Base East, Commodore Williams passed the 'weight of command' to Commodore Hissink, who was proud to accept his appointment as Deputy Fleet Commander and Director General Fleet Lethality and Force Generation.

“With our fleet maintaining a near continuous presence throughout the Indo-Pacific region, I am honoured to be able to support our sailors as they carry out their mission of protecting Australia and its interests,” Commodore Hissink said.

Commodore Williams assumed the role of Deputy Fleet Commander and Director General Fleet Lethality and Force Generation in April 2025.

“I am privileged to have been able to serve in the position of Deputy Fleet Commander and Director General Fleet Lethality and Force Generation,” she said.

“I am extremely proud of the work done by the Maritime Warfare Centre and the Force Generation Directorate to ensure that our fleet can maximise its efficiency and lethality.

“A particular highlight is the power of the series of Australian Maritime Weapons and Tactics Conferences, which has been led by this branch. The first three events have really put fleet command and the Maritime Warfare Centre on the map. 

“There is great interest and engagement across the joint force, which enables integrated outcomes for the maritime domain.”

Highlights of Commodore Williams’ tenure include the commissioning of the Fleet Battle Lab at Fleet Base East and the introduction of new aerial targets into service.

Before assuming the new role, Commodore Hissink served as the Director Maritime Warfare Centre. 

Other career highlights in his 30 years of service include serving as Executive Officer of HMAS Choules and as the commissioning Commanding Officer of HMAS Supply, bringing both a new ship and a new class of ships into service.

“My position as Director Maritime Warfare Centre has prepared me to continue executing the vision set by Commodore Williams, which will ultimately enhance our capabilities not only as a blue-water navy, but an integrated force with the Australian Defence Force,” Commodore Hissink said.

Commodore Williams will assume the role of Commander Australian Fleet on promotion to rear admiral later this year.
