Two officers and two sailors from the naval component of the Timor-Leste Defence Force (F-FDTL) visited Darwin to gain experience and build relationships with the Royal Australian Navy.
Australia’s longstanding Defence Cooperation Program with Timor-Leste facilitated the placements at HMAS Coonawarra.
The four personnel participated in exchange program activities, toured the facilities and joined their Australian counterparts in local Anzac Day commemorations.
Coonawarra’s Lieutenant Commander Victoria Beasy hosted the group on a tour of the local Navy base.
“In our chats during the tour and over a coffee, I learned our four international counterparts have half a century of military experience between them,” she said.
“So being able to share our skills with them, and vice versa, not only strengthens our ties but also promotes mutual understanding and respect.”
Commanding Officer Coonawarra Captain Bernadette Alexander said it was a pleasure to welcome the four F-FDTL embeds to the Australian base in the Top End.
“It was a pleasure to host them here in Darwin, especially over Anzac Day and during NT Defence Week,” Captain Alexander said.
“Australia and Timor-Leste have a long history of military cooperation reflecting our enduring friendship and bonds between our two militaries.”
As well as work, the team explored the iconic Berry Springs Nature Park and the Darwin Museum.
The Defence Cooperation Program has been operating in partnership with the F-FDTL and Ministry of Defence since 2001, as part of the broader program activities in the region.
The regular placements at Coonawarra highlight the growing closeness of the two militaries through shared defence and security priorities.
