There are few training environments that test a soldier like stepping into the ring in front of their own battalion.

Soldiers from the 8th/9th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (8/9 RAR), recently came together for a combative tournament, testing their physical and mental resilience in front of a packed crowd of peers.

During the tournament, soldiers from across the battalion stepped into the ring to represent their companies in a series of rounds with massive support from across the unit.

Captain Callum Webb, of 8/9 RAR, said the event offered soldiers an experience difficult to replicate in routine training.

“Combative tournaments, especially at battalion level, truly embody the spirit of the infantry, combining dedication, competition, physical robustness and a combat mindset,” he said.

“It takes a lot of courage to get into the ring surrounded by your peers and fight another soldier. It’s an experience that cannot really be replicated in any other training environment.”

He said the lead-up training played an equally important role, bringing soldiers and officers together across companies and differing experience levels.

Soldiers trained side by side, sharing skills and techniques, building confidence and mentoring one another.

Beyond the competition itself, the tournament also highlighted the strong sense of unit pride within the battalion, with companies rallying behind their fighters as they entered the ring.

“This year we saw a huge amount of support from the companies as they marched their fighters into the ring, cheering, coaching and showing pride in their company,” Captain Webb said.

For Captain Webb, one of the defining features of the night was the respect shown between competitors once the fights ended.

“Fighters go all out chasing that victory, but at the end, both fighters will hug each other and show a great deal of respect for their opponent,” he said.

“That extends outside the ring too, as lines of officers and soldiers shook fighters’ hands, patting their backs and telling them just how great their fights were.”
