Personnel from 723 Squadron welcomed Silver Star recipient and former squadron member, Andy Perry, for a ceremonial visit focused on service, resilience and professional mastery in aviation operations.

During the visit, Mr Perry presented his own portrait to the Commanding Officer, Commander Joel Cooper, as part of the Veterans Portrait Project, underscoring the enduring connection between veterans and the serving Navy community.

Addressing pilots, aircrew and support staff, Mr Perry spoke candidly about leadership under pressure, mission focus in dynamic environments, and the importance of teamwork, airworthiness and crew resource management.

His reflections resonated strongly with the Defence values that guide naval aviators and with the daily demands of safe and effective rotary-wing operations.

“This portrait pays tribute to a Silver Star awardee who served with distinction and his example continues to shape the squadron’s identity and the standards we uphold today,” Commander Cooper said.

The Veterans Portrait Project honours the lived experiences of veterans while fostering community understanding and support.

The portrait reflects the contribution made by then-Sub-Lieutenant Perry as a member of the Royal Australian Navy Helicopter Flight Vietnam, where he “distinguished himself by gallantry in action on May 18, 1970, while serving as a pilot on a UH-1H Helicopter”.

Mr Perry’s donation will be displayed within 723 Squadron as a visible reminder of the legacy that current and future aviators are privileged to carry forward.

Concluding the visit, squadron members reflected on how learning, mentorship and professional discipline carry that legacy forward on the flight line, in the hangar, and in every briefing and debrief.

“It’s about investing in people and staying mission ready while caring for one another,” Mr Perry said.

723 Squadron thanked Mr Perry for his service, generosity and ongoing contribution to the veteran community.
