KD Lekir and HMAS Warramunga arrived at HMAS Stirling in Western Australia recently to complete the bilateral Malaysia-Australia Training Exercise (MASTEX).
The biannual activity brings together the Royal Malaysian Navy and the Royal Australian Navy for a week of maritime training designed to strengthen cooperation and understanding.
Commanding Officer Warramunga Commander Ken Brown said the event represented far more than a routine exercise.
“MASTEX is a powerful expression of the deep and enduring partnership between Australia and Malaysia,” Commander Brown said.
“It is a partnership built on shared history, trust and mutual respect, and strengthened through decades of close defence cooperation and strong people-to-people ties.
“Malaysia’s presence here today is not just that of a participating unit in a maritime exercise, but of a trusted partner, a professional navy and a valued friend.”
Previous iterations of MASTEX have included coordinated surface warfare serials, complex communication exercises and maritime interdiction operations that tested equipment and the ability of crews to think and act as one team.
Commanding Officer Lekir Commander Megat Mohamed Sofwan Firdaus bin Megat Mohamad Yunus said each iteration further strengthened the partnership and enhanced readiness for real-world contingencies.
“MASTEX is a reflection of a partnership that has been built and strengthened over time,” Commander Megat said.
“Since its establishment in 2002, MASTEX has grown into a key bilateral engagement between our two navies, consistently enhancing interoperability, operational exchange and mutual trust.
“It is truly an honour to be here as your guest for MASTEX, and to stand once again alongside our close partners from the Royal Australian Navy.”
The exercise began with a harbour phase hosted at Stirling before moving into a sea phase, featuring ship handling manoeuvres, gunnery drills and anti-submarine warfare exercises.
It continues a relationship grounded in more than 70 years of diplomatic engagement.
