Representatives from the ADF, APS and Defence contractor workforce attended an introduction to land power information session last month to build understanding of the land domain and the role of land power in national defence.

Participants from areas including policy, preparedness, capability development and military intelligence gained a deeper insight into the importance of land forces.

Director Army Concepts and Experimentation Colonel James Groves said the initiative combined short, focused seminars and an immersive tabletop wargame.

“Future Land Warfare Branch is leading the way on establishing an enduring educational offering that uplifts organisational understanding of land power and its integral contribution to the ADF and a strategy of denial,” Colonel Groves said.

The seminar component was delivered by the Chief of Army’s Research Fellow Lieutenant Colonel (retd) Leo Purdy and Director of the Chief of Army’s Initiatives Group Colonel Tom McDermott.

They explored the fundamentals of land power and the distinctive intellectual and warfighting culture of the Army.

Learning then shifted from theory to practice through Littoral Commander, an educational wargame, with participants supported by wargaming facilitators and officers.

“Through the immersive wargame experience, they got to explore littoral manoeuvre, land‑based maritime strike, and the integrated nature of modern warfighting, with an opportunity to apply their new knowledge in a practical setting,” Colonel Groves said.

Nominations will be available for another information session later this year.
