When Vanessa Ashworth joined Defence straight out of university, she could never have imagined the remarkable journey she was embarking on. 

What began as an entry-level position in the Australian Public Service (APS) turned into 22 years of exceptional experiences, continuous professional development and a deep sense of purpose that still inspires her today.

Ms Ashworth said even though one of the defining moments of her career was gaining a medal for her deployment to the Middle East, the professional and personal bonds formed during that time were just as valuable.

“While it was an honour and a privilege to receive an Australian Operational Service Medal for my deployment, the experience, personal development and friends I made is something that will always stay with me,” she said.

Before joining the Task Force, Ms Ashworth worked in the Land Systems Division – within the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group – where she provided financial advice and support to key projects. It was in this role she witnessed the scale and impact of Defence capabilities.

“Seeing firsthand the capability, which is delivered and maintained by Land Systems Division, in the environment it was designed for, is an experience most people outside the Australian Defence Force would not normally get to see,” Ms Ashworth said.

‘‘I even had the opportunity [to fly] in a C-130.”

For Ms Ashworth, these moments highlight the unique nature of Defence careers. She said it was not just the work itself, but the opportunity to be part of something bigger – and to grow personally and professionally along the way.

“Seize everything on offer, whether it is a secondment, overseas employment opportunity, or a transfer of job family. Your career is your own, and only you can determine what is best for you,’’ she said.

Ms Ashworth’s story is a reminder of the breadth of opportunity across Defence, from contributing to critical projects that support the ADF to developing specialist skills and gaining experience few other workplaces can offer.
