Putting on the Air Force uniform for the first time was a defining moment for Flying Officer Tianlu Yang.

“It felt like a ‘wow’ moment – a genuine sense that a long-held dream had come true,” she said.

Since joining the Royal Australian Air Force in 2023, Flying Officer Yang has applied her skills and experience to support Defence capability in an increasingly joint and multinational operating environment.

Initially posted to 464 Squadron at HMAS Harman as a personnel capability officer, Flying Officer Yang recently commenced a new role as a SO3 enabler within the Workforce Design and Integration Division of Vice Chief of the Defence Force Group. The role supports workforce planning across the land, maritime, air, space and cyber domains.

Working closely with stakeholders across Defence, she helps coordinate, analyse and integrate information to ensure workforce design decisions are aligned and capable of supporting current and future operational requirements.

“Modern operations rely on effective coordination across the services and with international partners,” she said.

“Workforce integration plays a key role in enabling that cooperation.”

'In today’s complex environment, diversity strengthens decision-making, improves collective understanding and enables us to operate more effectively with partners.'

Career highlights have included supporting Exercise Pitch Black 2024 and Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025, contributing to large-scale joint and multinational workforce integration efforts.

“These exercises reinforce how important collaboration and mutual understanding are in joint environments,” she said.

“They show how diverse skills and perspectives directly support mission success.”

As a higher-level, ADF-recognised Japanese linguist, Flying Officer Yang has used her language and cultural skills to support Air Force, joint and integrated force activities, including international engagement with Japan.

“Language and cultural understanding helps build trust, reduce misunderstandings and strengthen relationships,” she said.

“That trust is essential for effective joint and multinational operations.”

Reflecting on Harmony Week, Flying Officer Yang said diversity is a critical enabler for Defence capability.

“In today’s complex environment, diversity strengthens decision-making, improves collective understanding and enables us to operate more effectively with partners,” she said.
