When a young recruit’s psychosocial injury escalated into a life-threatening crisis, Corporal Sarah Vella became the steady, decisive presence he needed.

Posted to the 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse Regiment in January 2025, Corporal Vella often served as a troop staff member responsible for supervising, guiding and supporting up to 40 Army Reserve recruits, including managing and supporting welfare concerns when required.

Drawing on her training and understanding of her trainees, she recognised the signs of severe distress during what began as a routine welfare check.

Her awareness of these hidden pressures enabled her to respond decisively when she noticed a single, unusual message.

When the soldier didn’t answer Corporal Vella’s calls, she persisted, phoning him repeatedly until it became clear something was seriously wrong.

"When his behaviour was slightly off – just one unusual line in a message – I called him immediately to check up on him," Corporal Vella said.

“He didn’t answer. I thought that was unusual, so I kept calling, three to four times.”

Recognising the urgency, she escalated the situation through her chain of command, activating the incident management plan.

'The injuries you can’t see are often the hardest.'

Working with the Regimental Sergeant Major, she obtained the soldier’s home address, contacted emergency services and proceeded to the soldier’s home for a welfare check.

After arriving, Corporal Vella remained with him for more than 12 hours, providing calm, compassionate support while ensuring he received medical attention and specialist care.

Her actions directly contributed to saving his life, demonstrating the highest standards of Jonathan Church Good Soldiering Award values.

Corporal Vella’s conduct throughout the incident reflects her deep commitment to the welfare of her trainees.

"The injuries you can’t see are often the hardest, and some members feel like failures when they can’t complete certain training, even though they shouldn’t," she said.

Her attentiveness, persistence and readiness to act under pressure showcase the professionalism expected of Defence personnel and highlight the impact vigilant leadership can have during moments of crisis.
