HMAS Warramunga recently participated in the Indian Navy’s International Fleet Review (IFR), as well as the multilateral Exercise Milan in the Bay of Bengal.

President of India Droupadi Murmu conducted the ceremonial review of more than 70 warships anchored off Visakhapatnam during the IFR, highlighting India’s growing maritime capability and its commitment to supporting a rules-based order.

The IFR and Milan are among India’s most significant multilateral maritime engagements, drawing 86 ships and aircraft from 74 nations. Together, they promote shared understanding of security interests and reaffirm collective support for a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

Milan 2026 is the largest iteration in the exercise’s history. During the opening ceremony, India’s Minister for Defence, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, welcomed the nations in attendance.

“It is a privilege for me to present in the opening ceremony of Exercise Milan, here at Visakhapatnam, the City of Destiny, and indeed, the jewel of India's east coast,” Mr Singh said.

“I convey India's sincere appreciation for your enthusiastic participation in this significant maritime event.

“Yesterday at the International Fleet Review by the Honourable President of India, we witnessed a clear affirmation of goodwill, professionalism and a mutual respect among the world's navies.

“It was a powerful reminder that while our flags differ, we all speak the same maritime language.”

Milan brought together maritime professionals from across the world to strengthen professional bonds, share best practices and enhance cooperation at sea.

Ahead of the exercise, Commanding Officer Warramunga Commander Ken Brown said it would provide a valuable learning opportunity.

“Over the coming days, our ship will take part in complex maritime manoeuvres, drills and exercises, alongside professional exchanges and discussions that build understanding, trust and interoperability,” Commander Brown said.

“We hope this edition of Milan marks a meaningful step forward in our collective efforts to promote a stable, secure and open maritime environment.”
