At HMAS Albatross in Nowra, 723 Squadron has soared past a remarkable aviation milestone, recording an impressive 50,000 flying hours on the EC-135 helicopter fleet. This achievement marks another proud chapter for a squadron that has been shaping ADF aviators since 1952.
The achievement represents far more than hours in the air. It reflects the combined efforts of a dedicated and diverse team who enable safe and effective flying operations every day.
Over the years, 723 Squadron has delivered thousands of training sorties, supporting the development of Navy and Army aircrew who will go on to serve in operational aviation units across Australia and overseas.
These flying hours represent the squadron’s unwavering commitment to producing highly skilled aviators capable of meeting the evolving needs of the ADF.
Central to this success are the instructors who mentor and shape each new generation of aircrew. Their professionalism, technical expertise and relentless focus on safety ensure trainees receive excellent instruction throughout their aviation journey.
“Reaching 50,000 EC-135 flying hours is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the professionalism of every person who contributes to our mission”
Equally vital are the squadron’s industry partners, Boeing Defence Australia and Thales, whose technical excellence keeps the EC-135 aircraft and simulators mission-ready year-round. Their behind-the-scenes work forms the backbone of safe flight operations, enabling high training output and a dependable flying program.
Supporting all of this is the squadron’s dedicated team of operations staff, administrators and unit personnel who keep 723 Squadron running efficiently every day. Their efforts ensure that schedules align, member needs are supported and the training mission remains on track.
Commanding Officer 723 Squadron, Commander Joel Cooper, highlighted the significance of the milestone and the people who made it possible.
“Reaching 50,000 EC-135 flying hours is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the professionalism of every person who contributes to our mission,” Commander Cooper said.
“Our instructors, trainees, industry partners and support staff work tirelessly to deliver safe, high-quality aviation training, and this milestone reflects their dedication.
"I am immensely proud of our team and grateful for their commitment every day as we continue 723 Squadron’s long tradition of excellence.”
As one of the longest-serving aviation training squadrons in the Royal Australian Navy, 723 Squadron continues to uphold a strong legacy built over 74 years.
With this latest milestone, the squadron reinforces its role as the cornerstone of Defence helicopter training and a key contributor to Australia’s future aviation capability.
