In the sweltering heat of Darwin, a striking blend of Chinese dragons, suits, heels and Navy whites marked the opening of the Northern Territory Parliament and its first sittings of 2026, bringing together the ADF and local leaders in a celebration of culture and service.
The historic event was attended by members of HMAS Coonawarra, including Able Seaman Navy Police coxswain Jake Riedel.
While not something he thought he’d be doing when he joined the Navy, Able Seaman Riedel said it was a meaningful opportunity to be part of local history.
“It was my first time in Darwin’s Parliament House during a sitting and it was truly eye opening, and I’m glad I was able to attend,” Able Seaman Riedel said.
“During the morning tea, the members of parliament kindly came to greet us and get to know their local ADF members.”
The opening ceremony included a traditional prayer and an Acknowledgement of Country, followed by a vibrant dance from the Darwin Chung Wah Society Dragon & Lion Dance Troupe to spread prosperity while ringing in the Year of the Fire Horse.
Commanding Officer HMAS Coonawarra Captain Bernadette Alexander also attended.
“Opportunities like these strengthen our fleet’s connection to the community and government, which is vital to achieving our mission,” Captain Alexander said.
She expressed her gratitude at the valuable opportunity for Defence members to meet their local community leaders.
The event was a powerful reminder of the strong and ongoing partnership between the ADF and the Northern Territory parliamentarians – a relationship anchored on mutual respect, shared commitment and a dedication to serving the nation together.
