Locals filled up the gangway to gain a glimpse into life at sea during an open day for HMAS Stalwart at Macquarie Wharf, Hobart.
More than 650 community members lined the wharf to admire the ship, which was supporting celebrations for the 188th Royal Hobart Regatta, including the honour of serving as the flagship for the iconic regatta race.
Commanding Officer Stalwart Commander Ash Payne said the crew was excited to continue a connection with the aquatic festival, which began more than 50 years ago.
“The mighty Stalwart name held flagship duties for this event three times in the 1970s,” she said.
“This year is the first chance my crew and I have had to be the flagship so we’re really honoured to continue that tradition and keep the Stalwart name connected to this great event.”
'It’s a unique ship with a specialised capability and we’re really proud to be able to share that with the local community and have them on board.'
As one of two Supply-class ships, Stalwart plays a distinctive role in the fleet, serving and sustaining operations at sea.
This includes replenishing ships with vital mission supplies such as fuel, water, food, cargo and ammunition.
“It’s a unique ship with a specialised capability and we’re really proud to be able to share that with the local community and have them on board,” Commander Payne said.
“Equally as impressive is our amazing crew. I get to see that every day so I’m pleased that the public can experience that and get to learn more about our people and the incredible capabilities they bring to serving our nation.”
The ADF also supported a range of other activities across the Royal Hobart Regatta festival, including an aerial display by the Air Force Roulettes, performances by the Navy rock band and ADF career activations.
