Group Captain Nadia Harrison’s passion for the cyber domain began in her first year at the Australian Defence Force Academy.

Drawn to the direct operational impact of cyberspace provisioning capabilities and technologies, Group Captain Harrison posted to Combat Communications Squadron (1CCS) after graduation.

“The technology has changed a lot over the years, but that direct enabling effect has not,” she said.

“It is even more integrated and critical to Defence operations now than ever before.”

20 years later, Group Captain Harrison returned to 1CCS as its Commanding Officer.

“To lead the same unit that motivated me to pursue a career in the cyber domain was an amazing personal milestone,” she said.

“Being able to support such a talented group of aviators, all focused on enabling Defence operations, was incredibly rewarding.”

'I was told that the ultimate measure of success is that those who come after you are better than you – that you could see yourself working for them one day.'

Throughout her career, Group Captain Harrison has placed strong emphasis on teamwork and supporting others.

“Nothing is done alone, and I have been very fortunate to have had an incredible group of people around me throughout my career so far,” she said.

A message from a mentor early in her career has remained central to her leadership philosophy.

“On my first day as a junior officer, I was told that the ultimate measure of success is that those who come after you are better than you – that you could see yourself working for them one day,” Group Captain Harrison said.

“I have never been motivated by honours and awards or promotions, just making a positive impact on the organisation.

“But to be recognised by the organisation in such a significant way means a lot.”

While honoured to receive the Member of the Order of Australia, she said her greatest pride came from seeing the calibre of professionals entering Air Force and the cyber domain.

Group Captain Harrison was recognised in the 2026 Australia Day honours for exceptional service in developing and delivering expeditionary cyberspace provisioning capabilities for the Royal Australian Air Force.
