Seventeen Australian Defence Force reservists are set to boost their civilian careers after being named recipients of the prestigious 2026 Prince of Wales Award.

The award recognises the dual contribution reservists make in serving the nation while excelling in their civilian professions.

Each reservist will receive up to $10,000 to undertake training or development activities that directly benefit their civilian roles.

Head of Reserve and Cadet Support Division Major General Michelle Campbell said that by investing in the professional growth of reservists, Defence acknowledged the transferable skills that enhance capability across both domains.

“This initiative is more than just financial support – it’s a recognition of the adaptability, leadership and dedication that reservists demonstrate every day, whether in uniform or in the workplace,” Major General Campbell said.

“The Prince of Wales Award reinforces the valuable link between Defence service and civilian employment. It’s an investment in their future and a recognition of their outstanding service on both fronts.”

She said reserve service offered significant benefits, providing opportunities to develop civil and military skills that support career growth within and beyond Defence.

The funding from the award enables reservists to upskill, explore new areas of expertise, and bring fresh knowledge to their workplaces and Defence units.

The award also reflects Defence’s commitment to strengthening the relationship between reservists and their civilian employers.

Reservists account for about one third of the total ADF workforce and play a vital role in meeting the government’s workforce targets. Up to 1000 new positions will be created by 2030.

This year’s recipients represent a range of industries and professions, from policing consultancy to engineering and radiography.
