In a moving tribute to history and heroism, Australian Defence Force personnel deployed to Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula under Operation Mazurka joined representatives from Commonwealth countries, as well as France, Germany and Italy, to mark the 83rd anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein.

The commemorations honoured those who gave their lives during the North African campaign – a turning point in World War II.

A dedicated Anzac service, supported by a chaplain and bugler from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, highlighted the enduring bonds between Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

Reflecting on the occasion, Regimental Sergeant Major Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) James Wilson said the Australian contingent was deeply moved by the courage of the Anzac troops in North Africa.

“Standing in El Alamein, surrounded by the graves of those who gave everything, reminded us of the strength, resilience and unity of one of our greatest generations,” WO1 Wilson said.

“Their sacrifice in unforgiving conditions laid the foundation for the freedoms we enjoy today.

“To walk the ground they fought on and remember their sacrifice was a rare and meaningful experience for the Australian soldiers and aviators currently deployed on Operation Mazurka.”

Senior leaders also attended French and German memorial services, reinforcing the spirit of unity and mutual respect among partner nations.

Operation Mazurka is the ADF’s contribution to the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO), a non-United Nations organisation overseeing the security provisions of the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty.

Australia’s long-standing involvement in the MFO reflects our strong commitment to multinational peacekeeping and distinguished history in global operations.
