Flight Lieutenant Patricia ‘Patty’ Brazel was presented with the Belinda McGowan Memorial Award by School of Postgraduate Studies (SPS) Commanding Officer Wing Commander Amanda Norris and Bruce McGowan at RAAF Base Wagga, NSW, on January 12.

This prestigious award was established in 2023 during the unit’s 25th anniversary to honour the memory of long-time SPS instructor Flight Lieutenant Belinda ‘Bini’ McGowan.

“Flight Lieutenant McGowan was known for her fierce loyalty, professionalism and a sense of fun that filled the unit with warmth and compassion,” Wing Commander Norris said.

“Bini was a dedicated aviator whose presence made a marked difference to everyone at SPS. She was passionate about the Air Force and balanced her high standards of professionalism with a genuine care for those around her.”

The award recognises the SPS member who best exemplifies Defence values and the legacy of ‘Bini’s’ influential leadership, while highlighting individuals whose behaviour and commitment elevate the entire unit.

“Flight Lieutenant Brazel embodies these qualities, demonstrating exceptional leadership across multiple roles and fostering an environment of trust and mutual respect. Her actions align with our school’s intent of being good humans, ensuring Bini’s spirit continues to inspire the next generation of leaders,” Wing Commander Norris said.

Flight Lieutenant Brazel said this award was more than an honour,

“It also carries a responsibility in having your name mentioned with such a meaningful foundation,” she said.

“Hearing stories about Belinda from her husband Bruce and members who worked alongside her helps me to understand the importance of her foundation. Bini was an amazing person whom I wish we had the chance to meet.

“I’m very lucky to be working with amazing and kind humans at SPS. For others who may not be so lucky, it becomes even more important that you be the kindness and light that is lacking in your environment.”

The Belinda McGowan Foundation was established after Flight Lieutenant McGowan died in 2021. Throughout her journey in palliative and end-of-life care, she encountered limitations in medical equipment in smaller healthcare facilities.

Bini had a vision for patients, their families and healthcare providers in regional areas to have access to high-quality medical equipment. To honour her vision, The Belinda McGowan Foundation was established.

SPS is proud to support The Belinda McGowan Foundation as its charity of choice, and contributes funds from the collection of empty cans and bottles towards the purchase of cuddle beds and syringe drivers.
