Through a consistent program of conditioning, sporting events and expeditions, Petty Officer Kerryn Seaborn ensured Navy personnel remained physically and mentally prepared during her posting at HMAS Cairns.
One major highlight was completing the Kokoda Track alongside Cairns personnel.
“It was physically demanding, mentally testing and incredibly unifying,” she said.
Petty Officer Seaborn also led multi‑day expeditions on Hinchinbrook Island and led teams in major community events that further showcased Cairns’ strong connection to Far North Queensland.
In recognition of her hard work and dedication, Petty Officer Seaborn received the Medal of the Order of Australia in the Military Division in the 2026 Australia Day honours list.
By establishing a consistent battle rhythm, she strengthened the unit’s physical training culture, improving continuity and participation and ensuring every member had regular opportunities to train, connect and challenge themselves.
'Helping someone take that extra step, then watching them discover they can achieve far more than they imagined is incredibly fulfilling.'
A key factor in the success of the program, she said, was the unwavering support of the Cairns command team.
“Command were among our biggest advocates. Their trust, encouragement and willingness to prioritise health and wellbeing empowered us to grow, innovate and deliver activities that genuinely strengthened the base,” she said.
Petty Officer Seaborn said working with an exceptional physical training instructor team was another highlight.
She said the committed and enthusiastic delivery of the structured program, as well as the engagement of all Cairns personnel and resident units, allowed the program to deliver a real and lasting impact.
Petty Officer Seaborn said she finds real satisfaction in supporting people as they push their limits.
“Helping someone take that extra step, then watching them discover they can achieve far more than they imagined is incredibly fulfilling,” she said.
“I take a lot of pride in what I do and I’m proud to serve. The Navy offers opportunities unlike anything else and when you feel supported, it’s an environment where you can really thrive.”
Her advice to others is to say yes to every opportunity.
“You’ll either learn something new about yourself or gain an experience that shapes the person you become,” Petty Officer Seaborn said.
“By leading with professionalism, genuine enthusiasm and authenticity, you become the kind of example that inspires others to follow.”
