A lively group of program participants, government dignitaries and local Defence leaders celebrated the conclusion of the first Cowork Coplay program in Darwin on December 2.
The 8-week program, developed by Human Quotient Group and delivered by two local Defence and veteran spouses, brought together partners of serving Defence Force members to focus on practical learning, career development, and wellbeing – with the support of onsite childcare.
Participants worked on meaningful career projects, launched businesses and pursued study. Together, they fostered community, supported each other’s goals and built strong connections.
The Cowork Coplay program has already transformed lives in Adelaide, Perth and Canberra and now, with the support of the Northern Territory Government, it has successfully delivered its first iteration in the Top End.
Commanding Officer of HMAS Coonawarra, Captain Bernadette Alexander, and Command Warrant Officer HMAS Coonawarra, Warrant Officer Dennis Bentley, attended the celebration to reflect on the support the program has provided to local Defence Force families.
“Navy ships do not leave the wharf without the love and support of our spouses and families,” Captain Alexander said.
'The most significant impact has been regaining the belief that I am someone who can begin again. And I discovered that I am not alone; there is a community ready to walk with me.'
“Cowork Coplay is an innovative program that values spouses and allows them to progress their own goals as well as support Defence family members.”
“Our families, friends and loved ones enable us to do what we do in our Navy, so it was both refreshing to experience this completion ceremony and the benefits the participants gained, as well as to personally thank them for enabling people to serve in the Australian Defence Force,” Warrant Officer Bentley said.
Michelle, whose spouse is posted to the Patrol Boat Group at HMAS Coonawarra, found immense value from participating in the Cowork Coplay program. After moving to Australia in 2024 with her husband and daughter, she found herself feeling isolated and lost.
"Participating in Cowork Coplay was a true turning point in my life,” Michelle said.
“After a long period of isolation, I was able to rebuild my sense of self, regain emotional strength and understand the hidden risks and pressures that Defence spouses often carry.
“Cowork Coplay is not just a program; it is a place where Defence families can rediscover hope, courage and a new beginning.
"The most significant impact has been regaining the belief that I am someone who can begin again. And I discovered that I am not alone; there is a community ready to walk with me.”
The program will be delivered again in Darwin and Katherine in 2026.
