Commander of the Australian Fleet Rear Admiral Christopher Smith recently joined HMAS Coonawarra personnel and their loved ones to mark the end of an impressive year.

Each month, the Coonawarra crew comes together with friends and family to present awards, promotions and honours, in what is a called a ‘clear lower deck’.

At the final clear lower deck for 2025, Commanding Officer Coonawarra Captain Bernadette Alexander reflected on their busy year, with all elements conducting round-the-clock operations and continuous support to the fleet.

“I’ve had the privilege to work in the north on previous postings, and when I joined HMAS Coonawarra with a cyclone on the horizon I was again reminded of the discipline and teamwork that the north is known for,” Captain Alexander said.

“It has been a massive and rewarding year for Coonawarra and it was an honour to join with friends and family to celebrate our peoples’ achievements.”

Rear Admiral Smith echoed Captain Alexander’s remarks, acknowledging the hard and important work of all who contributed to Australia’s national security at the country’s most northern naval base.

“I am immensely proud of the achievements of everyone at HMAS Coonawarra,” Rear Admiral Smith said.

“More than just the honours and awards recipients – everyone here has a played a part in what has been a challenging year.

“Our patrol boats are the most frequently deployed ships in the fleet. I am forever grateful to the friends and family of our people that continue to support them in protecting Australia’s national security.”

As the guest of honour, Rear Admiral Smith assisted in presenting the promotions, honours and awards, including a presentation of a Bronze Service Medallion to Boatswain's Mate Leading Seaman Jumay Htoo.
