Comet Bay College started making their own ‘Hero Bags’ for Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel in 2017, inspired by projects run by not-for-profit organisation Aussie Hero Quilts.

Students from the Year 10 fashion and style class are encouraged to take part as a simple but meaningful way to show their appreciation for the ADF.

Anne Siekman, the textiles teacher at Comet Bay College, said the project had given students the opportunity to express gratitude, build new skills and take part in a tradition that recognises those who serve.

“I am very proud of the maturity, respect and enthusiasm the students have all shown throughout the project,” Ms Siekman said.

Each year, Comet Bay College partners with a different ship, submarine or unit to create and present 20 handmade laundry bags as a gesture of thanks to the Defence members.

This year, the students delivered their laundry bags to the crew of HMAS Perth, and in return, they were invited for a tour of the ship and lunch with the command team and crew in the junior sailors’ mess on board HMAS Stirling.

Lillian Lohse, one of the students who participated in the Hero Bag project, said the experience was powerful, allowing her not only to contribute to the community, but also to understand the importance of supporting others.

“We had the opportunity to speak with some of the crew to deliver our 'Hero Bags', which proved to us how even small acts of kindness can make a positive difference,” Miss Lohse said.

“Overall, the 'Hero Bags' project has been a valuable learning experience, encouraging teamwork, strengthening our textile skills and reminding us of the importance of giving back.”

Commanding Officer Perth Commander Dylan White reflected on the opportunity to host the students for a ship tour and lunch.

“It was great to have the students from Comet Bay College on board,” Commander White said.

“We are very grateful for the laundry bags from the students and for the connection with the school through the ‘Hero Bags’ program.”
