Air Commodore Brett Williams assumed command of Air Force Training Group (AFTG) from Air Commodore David Strong in a formal change of command ceremony at RAAF Base Point Cook. The ceremony included a flyover by the CAC Winjeel aircraft from 100 Squadron.
Deputy Commander AFTG Group Captain Lloyd Sellick presided over the ceremony.
“I am honoured to have this opportunity to reflect on the remarkable contribution to AFTG by Air Commodore David Strong – known to most of us as ‘Strongy’ – who has had three extraordinary years leading as Commander,” Group Captain Sellick said.
“Notably, ‘Strongy’ has been steadfast in his pursuit for innovation and excellence, and pivotal in the transformation of our Air Force education and training system into one that is contemporary, scalable and sustainable. He leaves a legacy of progress, purpose and professionalism.”
In his final address, Air Commodore Strong reflected on the significance of the occasion as the winds of change blew in at Point Cook, the birthplace of the Royal Australian Air Force.
“41 years ago, on 14 January 1985, I walked through the gates of the RAAF Academy at Point Cook as a young cadet. Today, I stand before you at the very same location, completing my final Air Force role as Commander Air Force Training Group. It is a moment that brings my journey full circle,” Air Commodore Strong said.
He highlighted the group’s key achievements, including the delivery of thousands of graduates, the successful transition to PC-21 operations, the establishment of all through pilot training at 1 Flying Training School at RAAF Base East Sale, and progress towards advanced synthetic training capabilities.
“I am confident that under Air Commodore Brett Williams’ leadership, Air Force Training Group will continue to thrive,” Air Commodore Strong said.
“The mission remains clear: to care for our people, develop their readiness for conflict and contribute to Air Force preparedness, especially growing our force in a sustainable manner, as fast as we can, so that we can deter, compete, fight when necessary, and win in the defence of Australia.”
Air Commodore Williams, who previously commanded Air Academy and Air Mission Training School, accepted the AFTG message stick from Air Commodore Strong, symbolising the indigenous connection across land, sea and skies. This passing of communication between leaders recognises the connection between commanders and the passing of responsibility.
“I am honoured to assume command of such a vital and respected organisation within the Air Force,” Air Commodore Williams said.
“First, I want to acknowledge the outgoing commander for his leadership. His contributions have strengthened the foundation upon which we now continue to build.
“Our people are our greatest capability. Training is a strategic capability in its own right. My vision for AFTG is simple: to be a world-class training organisation that delivers resilient, capable aviators; strengthens Air Force readiness; and enhances national defence through exceptional people, strong relationships and efficient, innovative processes.”
