As the holiday season approaches, Defence News shares stories on the good work and achievements of ADF members from throughout the year.

Electronics technician Leading Seaman Rayna Ellis has described her debut for the Australian Defence Force Women’s Rugby Union team at the International Defence Rugby Competition (IDRC) 2025 as a “dream come true”.

The sailor from HMAS Warramunga pulled on the green-and-gold jersey for her first international fixture during the 2025 tournament in the United Kingdom, helping Australia to an emphatic win against the UK Looseheads, before a narrow loss to Fiji.

For Leading Seaman Ellis, the opportunity to represent her country was even more special by a family connection with her parents watching eagerly from the stands, having made the journey from Australia to see her debut.

Balancing rugby commitments with a demanding role at sea, however, has not always been an easy task.

“When you’re posted to a ship, your training and operational schedule can make it hard to prepare properly,” Leading Seaman Ellis said.

“Sometimes deployments mean missing out on club trials or games, but this year my command has been really supportive to give me the opportunity to be here.”

'Meeting the girls, creating a sisterhood and being a part of this campaign is something I will always treasure.'

The path to ADF Rugby has been a steady climb for Leading Seaman Ellis, beginning with civilian club rugby, before joining Navy Rugby and now taking the step up to international competition.

“Navy Rugby is like a sisterhood you cherish – it’s honestly my favourite time of year, more than Christmas!” she exclaimed.

“Through ADF Rugby, however, you meet new people and build friendships that last forever.”

The IDRC, held every four years, brings together Defence teams from eight nations, including Pacific partners Tonga and Fiji.

Beyond the results, Leading Seaman Ellis said the competition had been an unforgettable experience.

“Playing overseas is a pretty big achievement for me,” she said.

“Meeting the girls, creating a sisterhood and being a part of this campaign is something I will always treasure.”
