The Australian Defence Force and Armed Forces of the Philippines completed their largest dedicated program of training and expertise exchange this year.

The Joint Australian Training Team – Philippines' (JATT-P) efforts more than doubled in size in 2025 to include more than 20 training activities and exchanges at more than 30 locations in the Philippines.

About 1100 personnel – including 350 from the ADF and 750 from the Armed Forces of the Philippines – covered military skill sets including artillery and armoured combat tactics, combat engineering, joint fires and strategic communication.

The larger program in October included new engagement activities such as deployed air traffic control, airfield survey, air mobility maintenance, and maritime surveillance and planning for riverine and littoral operations.

Chief of Joint Operations Vice Admiral Justin Jones said the breadth of this year’s program showcased the deepening strategic relationship between the two nations.

“JATT-P forms part of our Enhanced Defence Cooperation Program, and serves as a cornerstone of our defence cooperation,” Vice Admiral Jones said.

“The knowledge shared during combined Philippine-Australian activities and the relationships we build with our Philippine friends all contribute to a mutual understanding and allow us to work together in support of regional stability and security.

“We see the benefit of our regular combined activities with Philippines play out in real time when we conduct major planned exercises and engagements.

“These existing relationships we have with the Philippines are essential when we must respond to emerging security challenges – quickly and at short notice.”

JATT-P coordinator in the Philippines, Major Lachlan Newham, said the 2025 program had increased in complexity and diversity, from a predominantly land-based focus to include the air, maritime and cyber domains.

“Regardless of their specialisation, Australian personnel invariably return home with new skills and insights into their Philippine counterparts, and a profound respect for their professionalism and dedication,” Major Newham said.
